The humanities are a composite field of study that includes history, philosophy, literature, religious studies, among many others. But the study of the humanities is more than an academic inquiry. It is also an exploration into what it means to be human. In this summer program, participating students will consider a range of questions at the core of the human experience – What is Justice? Who am I? How do I know what I know? – while also further enhancing their critical thinking skills as young scholars and citizens. Learn more about the program here.

Scientific writing is more than reporting the data of a study. Rather, it’s about the intellectual struggle (and, yes, creativity) to use data to better understand our world. In this summer writing program for science, students will engage in a set of writing activities that will aid the development of their research hypotheses, methods, and findings. In doing so, they will identify the ways in which writing serves as a vital tool of the research process. To aid the inquiry, students will experiment with informal writing-to-learn activities, critically read scholarly sources for differences and similarities in terms of methods and findings, and discuss and share our research and writing with each other. How does the study of art help us better understand ourselves? In this academic year initiative, students from Carnegie Mellon and Pittsburgh area high schools explored dance, hip-hop, and poetry as a lens on the idea of community in Pittsburgh and beyond.
